O Booker Prize, o prémio de maior prestígio do mundo para uma única obra de ficção escrita em inglês e publicada no Reino Unido ou na Irlanda, anunciou sua longa lista de finalistas para o ano de 2023. A Spell of Good Things, da nigeriana Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ está entre nessa lista.

Entre 160 romances candidatos, saíram 13 autores e títulos, com destaque para quatro autores estreantes, sendo um deles, Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ, da Nigéria, cujo romance A Spell of Good Things entrelaça o destino de duas famílias e descreve como as falhas políticas afetam suas vidas e levam a uma tragédia pessoal.

O júri descreveu a obra como uma “leitura poderosa e impressionante”, destacando sua narrativa excepcional e exame convincente da dinâmica social. Ayòbámi é a quinta romancista nigeriana a ser indicada para o Prémio Booker e seria a segunda vencedora nigeriana, depois de Ben Okri.

A lista mais reduzida será anunciada a 21 de setembro, que contará com seis obras. O vencedor final será revelado em 26 de novembro.

Ayòbámi Adébáyò notabilizou-se com o seu romance já traduzido para o português, Fica Comigo com o qual foi finalista Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction.

Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀’s novel shortlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize

The Booker Prize, the world’s most prestigious award for a single work of fiction written in English and published in the UK or Ireland, has announced its longlist for 2023. A Spell of Good Things by Nigerian Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ is among that list.

Out of 160 shortlisted novels, 13 authors and titles emerged, with four debut authors standing out, one of them being Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ from Nigeria, whose novel A Spell of Good Things intertwines the fate of two families and describes how political failures affect their lives and lead to a personal tragedy.

The jury described the work as a “powerful and impressive read”, highlighting its exceptional storytelling and compelling examination of social dynamics. Ayòbámi is the fifth Nigerian novelist to be nominated for the Booker Prize and would be the second Nigerian winner, after Ben Okri.

The shortlist will be announced on 21 September, which will feature six works. The final winner will be revealed on 26 November.

Ayòbámi Adébáyò made a name for herself with her novel, Stay with me, which has already been translated into Portuguese and was a finalist for the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction.
