As descobertas de uma investigação histórica recentemente concluída pela Swiss Benin Initiative (SBI), e citada num longo artigo publicado pela revista Art Africa, revelam que pelo menos três artefactos estariam ligados à invasão da Grã-Bretanha em 1897 contra o Benin.

As peças estão inclusas na exposição e pesquisa intitulada “Caminhos da arte: como os objectos chegam ao museu”, no Museu Rietberg Zürich. Uma rica colagem de material de arquivo exibido ao lado das obras de arte, incluindo fotografias coloniais e recibos de vendas, reconstrói sua proveniência – sua história de propriedade.

A exposição que traz ao de cima o debate vigente da restituição de obras de arte retiradas em África, mostra que os três artefactos estão entre os 21 objectos directamente ligados à invasão militar da Grã-Bretanha em 1897 contra a capital do reino, Benin City, no Benin coleções de oito museus públicos suíços.

Além da perda de muitas vidas e destruição da cidade de Benin, estima-se que 10.000 obras de arte tenham sido apreendidas durante o ataque militar.

Swiss museums investigate how they acquired art treasures from Benin

 

Findings from historical research recently completed by the Swiss Benin Initiative (SBI), and cited in a lengthy article published by Art Africa magazine, reveal that at least three artefacts would be linked to Britain’s 1897 invasion of Benin.

The pieces are included in the exhibition and research entitled “Pathways of art: how objects reach the museum” at the Museum Rietberg in Zürich. A rich collage of archival material displayed alongside the artworks, including colonial photographs and sales receipts, reconstructs their provenance – their history of ownership.

The exhibition, which brings up the current debate of restitution for artworks taken in Africa, shows that the three artefacts are among 21 objects directly linked to Britain’s 1897 military invasion of the kingdom’s capital, Benin City, in the Benin collections of eight Swiss public museums.

In addition to the loss of many lives and destruction of Benin City, an estimated 10,000 works of art were seized during the military assault.
