Demas Nwoko é o vencedor do Leão de Ouro da 18ª edição da Bienal de Arquitectura de Veneza. O arquitecto de 88 anos de idade, nascido na pacata zona de Idumuje-Ugboko, no sul da Nigéria é um artista, designer e mestre construtor na vanguarda do movimento de arte moderna do seu país.
O seu conjunto de obra exposta no pavilhão “o Laboratório do Futuro” foi o que mereceu a atenção e a distinção por este prémio pela curadoria. O prémio será entregue a 20 de Maio de 2023 na sede da La Biennale di Veneza.
A curadoria da Bienal considerou “absolutamente apropriado” que o Leão de Ouro seja atribuído a Demas Nkwoko, cuja obra se estende pelos últimos 70 anos, tendo estudado belas-artes no Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology em Zaria.
O impacto do trabalho de Nkwoko reside no seu desejo de sintetizar influências ocidentais com práticas autênticas e tradicionais africanas. Sua arquitetura demonstra esses interesses. Seus edifícios, embora pouco numerosos, demonstram uma abordagem sustentável e consciente dos recursos, ao mesmo tempo em que incorporam formas autênticas de expressão cultural.

Golden Lion of architecture awarded to Nigerian Demas Nkwoko
Demas Nwoko is the winner of the Golden Lion at the 18th edition of the Venice Architecture Biennale. The 88-year-old architect, born in the peaceful Idumuje-Ugboko area of southern Nigeria is an artist, designer and master builder at the forefront of his country’s modern art movement.
His body of work exhibited in the pavilion “the Laboratory of the Future” is what earned him the attention and distinction for this award by the curators. The prize will be awarded on 20 May 2023 at the headquarters of La Biennale di Venezia.
The Biennale curators considered it “absolutely appropriate” that the Golden Lion be awarded to Demas Nkwoko, whose work spans the past 70 years, having studied fine art at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology in Zaria.
The impact of Nkwoko’s work lies in his desire to synthesise Western influences with authentic, traditional African practices. His architecture demonstrates these interests. His buildings, though few in number, demonstrate a sustainable and resource-conscious approach while incorporating authentic forms of cultural expression.
