A 30ª edição do New York African Film Festival (NYAFF) terá lugar de 10 de Maio a 1 de Junho e contará com a exibição de mais de 50 filmes de mais de 25 países sobre a temática de formas de liberdade ou, mais especificamente, “freeforms”.

O NYAFF30 terá exibições em três locais: Film at Lincoln Center (10 a 16 de maio); Maysles Cinema no Harlem (19 a 21 de maio) e Brooklyn Academy of Music (26 de maio a 1º de junho).

Lançado em 1993, o NYAFF é um dos primeiros festivais de cinema nos Estados Unidos a refletir sobre as inúmeras maneiras pelas quais os cineastas africanos e da diáspora usaram a imagem em movimento para contar suas próprias histórias complexas e diferenciadas.

Mahen Bonetti, fundador da NYAFF justifica a realização deste festival no pela 30ª vez como forma de “neutralizar a narrativa segundo a qual, onde os africanos estavam sendo falados por imagens sombrias, e para fornecer um lugar onde a sétima arte poderia se tornar uma arma para recuperarmos nossas vozes, reapropriar nossas imagens e adicionar camadas à narrativa”.

Em destaque na abertura do festival está a estreia do terceiro filme da trilogia do realizador senegalês Moussa Sène Absa, centrado na mulher, e a exibição de quatro curtas-metragens de cineastas sul-africanos, Mzonke Maloney, Nolitha Mkulisi, Julie Nxadi e Evan Wigdorowitz, que refletem sobre a natureza sedutora, traiçoeira e ilusória da internet.

New York Film Festival with over 50 African films

 

The 30th edition of the New York African Film Festival (NYAFF) will take place from May 10th to June 1st and will feature the screening of over 50 films from more than 25 countries on the theme of forms of freedom or, more specifically, “freeforms“.

NYAFF30 will have screenings in three locations: Film at Lincoln Center (May 10-16); Maysles Cinema in Harlem (May 19-21) and Brooklyn Academy of Music (May 26-June 1).

Launched in 1993, NYAFF is one of the first film festivals in the United States to reflect on the myriad ways in which African and diaspora filmmakers have used the moving image to tell their own complex and distinctive stories.

Mahen Bonetti, founder of NYAFF justifies holding this festival for the 30th time as a way to “counteract the narrative that where Africans were being spoken to by shadowy images, and to provide a place where the seventh art could become a weapon to reclaim our voices, re-appropriate our images and add layers to the narrative.”

Featured at the festival opening is the premiere of the third film in Senegalese director Moussa Sène Absa’s trilogy, centred on women, and the screening of four short films by South African filmmakers, Mzonke Maloney, Nolitha Mkulisi, Julie Nxadi and Evan Wigdorowitz, which reflect on the seductive, treacherous and illusory nature of the internet.
