“Estrangeiros em todo o lado” é o tema da 60ª Bienal de Veneza, em 2024, e pretende explorar as abordagens em torno daqueles que estão à margem, ou seja, exilados, emigrados e forasteiros, anunciou o curador, Adriano Pedrosa.

O tema “Foreigners Everywhere” da Exposição Internacional de Arte da Bienal de Veneza, em Itália, decorrerá entre 20 de abril e 24 de novembro de 2024 e pela primeira vez terá como curador um profissional proveniente da américa-latina, concretamente, do Brasil.

Adriano Pedrosa que é diretor artístico do Museu de Arte de São Paulo, indicou que o tema da próxima bienal de arte reflectirá o mundo repleto de múltiplas crises  “relativas ao movimento e existência de pessoas entre países, nações, territórios e fronteiras, que refletem os perigos e armadilhas da linguagem, tradução e etnia, expressando diferenças e disparidades condicionadas pela identidade, nacionalidade, raça, gênero, sexualidade, riqueza e liberdade.”

E explicou o duplo sentido que assume a frase Foreigners Everywhere.

“Em primeiro lugar, onde quer que você vá e onde quer que esteja, sempre encontrará estrangeiros – eles/nós estamos em toda parte. Em segundo lugar, onde quer que te encontres, és sempre, verdadeiramente e no fundo, um estrangeiro”.

Adriano Pedrosa afirmou que a figura do estrangeiro é associada ao estranho pelo que a exposição vai se focar nos que estão à margem, “o artista queer, que transitou por diferentes sexualidades e gêneros, muitas vezes sendo perseguido ou banido; o artista outsider, que se situa à margem do mundo da arte, assim como o autodidata e o chamado artista popular; assim como o artista indígena, frequentemente tratado como estrangeiro em sua própria terra.”

Oportunidade para jovens artistas

Na mesma ocasião foi anunciada a partitura de uma chamada internacional para a Biennale College Arte que estará aberta por cinco semanas, de quinta-feira, 22 de junho, a segunda-feira, 24 de julho de 2023.

O concurso está reservado a jovens artistas emergentes com menos de 30 anos de todo o mundo (que tenham menos de 31 anos à data do prazo de candidatura), que tenham participado em pelo menos uma exposição coletiva e cuja obra tenha sido objeto de pelo menos uma exposição individual em espaços expositivos reconhecidos nacional e/ou internacionalmente.

Doze projetos serão selecionados e os artistas serão convidados a participar de um workshop de 10 dias dedicado ao desenvolvimento dos projetos propostos, que acontecerá em Veneza em outubro de 2023.

Venice Biennale 2024 explores the notion of “foreigner” and those on the margins

“Foreigners Everywhere” is the theme of the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024 and aims to explore approaches around those on the margins, i.e. exiles, emigrants and outsiders, announced the curator, Adriano Pedrosa.

The “Foreigners Everywhere” theme of the International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale in Italy will run from April 20th to the 24th of November 2024 and for the first time will be curated by a professional from Latin America, specifically Brazil.

Adriano Pedrosa who is artistic director of the São Paulo Art Museum, indicated that the theme of the next art biennale will reflect the world full of multiple crises “concerning the movement and existence of people between countries, nations, territories and borders, which reflect the dangers and pitfalls of language, translation and ethnicity, expressing differences and disparities conditioned by identity, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, wealth and freedom.”

And he explained the double meaning that the phrase Foreigners Everywhere takes on.

“First of all, that wherever you go and wherever you are you will always encounter foreigners—they/we are everywhere. Secondly, that no matter where you find yourself, you are always, truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner.”

Adriano Pedrosa said that the figure of the foreigner is associated with the strange so the exhibition will focus on those on the margins, “the queer artist, who has moved within different sexualities and genders, often being persecuted or outlawed; the outsider artist, who is located at the margins of the art world, much like the autodidact and the so-called folk artist; as well as the indigenous artist, frequently treated as a foreigner in their own land.”

Opportunity for young artists

On the same occasion, the score of an international call for Biennale College Arte was announced which will be open for five weeks from Thursday, June 22 to Monday, July 24, 2023.

The call is reserved for young emerging artists under the age of 30 from around the world (who are under the age of 31 at the application deadline), who have participated in at least one group exhibition and whose work has been the subject of at least one solo exhibition in nationally and/or internationally recognised exhibition spaces.

Twelve projects will be selected and the artists will be invited to participate in a 10-day workshop dedicated to the development of the proposed projects, which will take place in Venice in October 2023.
