Celebrando a excepcional criatividade, engenhosidade e impacto global da moda africana desde o início da década das independências africanas até hoje, Africa Fashion é a maior apresentação de género na América do Norte até 22 de Outubro de 2023.

Por meio de obras de designers e artistas icônicos de meados do século XX até o presente, a exposição mostra como a moda, ao lado das artes visuais e da música, desempenhou um papel fundamental no renascimento cultural da África durante seus anos de libertação e como esses elementos lançaram as bases para a revolução da moda atual.

A exposição é organizada pelo V&A e foi adaptada para o Brooklyn Museum por Ernestine White-Mifetu, Curadora de Arte Africana da Sills Foundation, e Annissa Malvoisin, Bard Graduate Center / Brooklyn Museum Postdoctoral Fellow in the Arts of Africa. A apresentação do Brooklyn é complementada por obras de várias coleções do Museu: Artes da África, Fotografia, Artes do Mundo Islâmico, Arte Contemporânea e Arte Egípcia, Clássica e do Antigo Oriente Próximo. Lar de uma das comunidades diaspóricas africanas mais dinâmicas do país, o Brooklyn oferece o cenário perfeito para explorar a riqueza e a diversidade das muitas histórias e culturas do continente.

Organizada tematicamente, a exposição apresenta exibições imersivas de roupas, tecidos, fotografias, literatura, esboços, música, filmes e cenas de passarela. Mais de 40 designers e artistas de 20 países africanos estão representados, muitos dos quais com trabalhos exibidos pela primeira vez nos Estados Unidos. A apresentação inclui moda de designers de meados do século XX, bem como trabalhos de uma nova geração de designers, coletivos e fotógrafos de moda que trabalham na África hoje.

Africa Fashion celebrates the global impact of African fashion 

The exhibition features over 180 works, including fashion, music, film, visual arts and photography, as well as textiles and jewellery from the Arts of Africa collection, Brooklyn Museum.

Celebrating the exceptional creativity, ingenuity and global impact of African fashion from the early decade of African independence to today, Africa Fashion is the largest presentation of its kind in North America until 22 October 2023.

Through works by iconic designers and artists from the mid-20th century to the present, the exhibition shows how fashion, alongside the visual arts and music, played a key role in Africa’s cultural renaissance during its liberation years and how these elements laid the foundations for today’s fashion revolution.

The exhibition is organised by the V&A and has been adapted for the Brooklyn Museum by Ernestine White-Mifetu, Curator of African Art at the Sills Foundation, and Annissa Malvoisin, Bard Graduate Center / Brooklyn Museum Postdoctoral Fellow in the Arts of Africa. The Brooklyn presentation is complemented by works from the Museum’s various collections: Arts of Africa, Photography, Arts of the Islamic World, Contemporary Art, and Egyptian, Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Art. Home to one of the most dynamic African diasporic communities in the country, Brooklyn provides the perfect setting to explore the richness and diversity of the continent’s many histories and cultures.

Organised thematically, the exhibition features immersive displays of clothing, fabrics, photographs, literature, sketches, music, film and catwalk scenes. More than 40 designers and artists from 20 African countries are represented, many of whom have work exhibited for the first time in the United States. The presentation includes fashion by mid-century designers as well as work by a new generation of fashion designers, collectives and photographers working in Africa today.
